OSU – Oklahoma City, located in the heart of Oklahoma City, is looking for a English Specialist.

 

 

Job Summary:


This position is 30 hours a week. The English Specialist will provide on-going instruction/tutoring in the areas of grammar, English, research, and essay development. They will design quarterly Newsletter highlighting SOAR students, activities, study tips, and scholarship opportunities. They will assess student skill levels, design individualized programs of study, assist students through remedial and college level classes, evaluate the progress and facilitate educational goals. They will provide ideas for campus awareness and Project SOAR marketing for recruitment. In addition, they will spend several hours a week working outreach through the campus community to make sure SOAR is known throughout the campus community. Overall goal of Specialist is to assist and intervene with support services for academic and retention success. Additionally, the specialist will empower disadvantaged students (low-income, 1st generation and disabled) with academic and personal tools and skills that will help them persist in college until attaining a degree.

  

Rate of Pay:  $14.20 per hour



Requirements

 

Education:

 

Bachelor's Degree in English

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

Masters degree in English

 

 

 

Experience:

 

1-2 years of English teaching experience. Preference to those who have had previous tutoring experience in an educational setting. Preference to those who have had at least 1 year working in student services, including academic, personal, career counseling and developmental education

 

 

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

 

Professional and positive behavior and appearance

 

Must be dependable, responsible and prompt

 

Ability to work efficiently independently and in a team environment

 

Ability to work closely and efficiently with students of varying cultural and ethnic backgrounds and skill levels

 

Knowledge of tutoring techniques and strategies

 

 Working knowledge from Developmental Writing through English Comp II

 

Ability to problem solve and coordinate tutoring sessions

 

Ability to enter computer contact reports on each students session

 

Basic understanding of printers, copy machines, Microsoft Office & Newsletter design software

 

Ability to gather data, analyze it, and generate grade and attendance reports for retention demonstration

 

Understanding of different research paper formats

 

Evidences a history of demonstrating ethical and professional behavior

 

 

 

Certifications &/or Licenses:

 

Valid Oklahoma Driver's License

 

Satisfactory background check required

 

 

 

Environmental Conditions:

 

Normal inside office conditions

 

Occasional outside conditions when on cultural events and transfer events

 

Physical Demands: 

Normal office physical requirements

 

Occasionally requires lifting of up to 25 pounds
