Works with staff to accomplish tasks set by the Greenhouse and Gardens Manager. Serves as technical supervisor to convey task expectations to staff, student workers, seasonal temporaries, and volunteers.  Supervises one horticulture technician.  Responsible for the inventory and tracking of plant sales.  Assists in the oversight of greenhouse (production and facilities), plant sales and horticulture student labs. Assists with the production of greenhouse crops. Assists with the growth, care and maintenance of indoor and outdoor plants.  Responsible for the preparation and set-up of materials for labs.

Rate of Pay: $10.37 hr


Essential Job Functions:




  1. Responsible for the inventory and tracking of plant sales.          

  2. Coordinates (technical supervision) tasks and supervises horticulture technicians, student workers, seasonal temporaries and volunteers.

  3. Assists with speciality greenhouse services, as requested, by supervisor and detailed in written greenhouse service agreements.

  4. Assists in the responsibility for the growth and care of floral crops and woody plant materials.

  5. Coordinates watering, fertilizing and maintenance operations for greenhouses, quonset and shadehouse plant materials.

  6. Assists in transplanting, weeding, watering, cultivation, and maintenance of all indoor areas of the Agriculture Resource Center (inlcuding but not limited to the conservatory and lobby planter).

  7. Ensures that work areas are clean and organized at the end of each work day.

  8. Responsible to provide garden/greenhouse and laboratory materials that are needed for class


  9. Responsible to prepare and set up of materials for laboratory work.

  10. Assists with provision of safety training as well as the physical inventory of equipment and chemicals as needed.

  11. Coordinates maintenance and care of Student Center and campus buildings’ foliage plant materials.

  12. Assists with Horticulture technician training.

  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:




Work Experience:




3-4 years gardens/grounds maintenance experience, greenhouse experience and production practices.






Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Basic understanding of crop production
  • Knowledge of horticultural practices and techniques


  • Ability to follow safe work practices and policies


  • Ability to apply fertilizers, herbicides, etc.


  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to change
  • Ability to efficiently prioritize and organize work assignments.
  • Strong organizational skills


  • Good communication and interpersonal skills; ability to positively interact and work cooperatively with a diversity of people
  • Ability to read and interpret printed materials for chemicals, basic charts, diagrams and instruction materials


  • Ability to prepare written reports, record information, interpret/summarize data, etc.


  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications - Microsoft Word, Excel, email and internet




Licenses & Certifications:


  • Must have current certified pesticide applicator’s license (Category 3), or ability to become licensed within (6) six months of hire date
  • Must have valid Oklahoma driver’s license








Associate degree in Horticulture or equivalent work experience.  




Preferred Qualifications:




Experience operating and maintaining greenhouse equipment (sprayers, mowers, tillers, etc) and knowledge of safety practices is a plus.



Working Conditions:




  • Requires working in all types of weather conditions, exposure and handling of various plants, materials, chemicals, dust, fumes, and gases, etc.

  • Working on occasional weekends and/or special events outside of normal working hours may be required.

Physical Requirements:


  • Standing and/or walking approximately 7-8 hours per day


  • Significant physical stamina to perform tasks that require frequent/continuous physical activities


  • Frequent to continuous bending/stooping, squatting/crouching, and pushing/pulling, lifting/carrying

  • Requires frequent carrying/lifting of materials up to 50 pounds

  • Must be able to use both feet for repetitive movements as in operating foot controls on equipment.


  • Ability to use both hands for repetitive actions requiring simple/firm grasping and/or fine manipulation. Ability and skill to operate tools and equipment required for job
