Job Description: To develop in each student the skills of critical thinking, and to aid students in becoming proficient writers in the discipline, capable of using appropriate grammar, mechanics, and composition for every-day life and the academic and work environments.

Salary:

Qualified individuals must work constructively with faculty, staff, and university officials to accomplish essential job functions. An incumbent must use tact, diplomacy, and professionalism at all times; follow school dress standards, adhere to departmental and divisional attendance and leave policies, and maintain appropriate habits conducive to a productive and professional work environment.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Teach fifteen (15) credit hours per semester or equivalent service. This may include evening or online instruction.
  2. Coordinate the HIST courses, including syllabus, assessment, and related materials.
  3. Serve as lead instructor for assigned areas and maintain appropriate records.
    • Provide the first-level of advice and or assistance in academic areas
    • Solve problems involving students and/or instruction
    • Field instructor questions, concerns, or requests in your lead area.
    • Hire new adjunct instructors as needed
    • Mediate the grievance process for students, as follows
      • Make every effort to resolve the problem at the first level

      • Point out ways the student can self evaluate or improve study skills, when appropriate

      • Support instructional rigor, and exercise fair treatment of students in all situations

      • Suggest ways the instructor can strengthen instruction and/or presentation skills, when appropriate

      • Inform the department/division head of the situation in case the student decides to pursue the grievance to the next level

         

  • Orient new faculty to assigned courses

  • Review and select appropriate texts and technologies for faculty and student use

  • Continually improve existing curriculum by assisting the department head in designing or revising new curricula

  • Develop and maintain course syllabi for the assigned lead areas

  • Develop semester course schedules and assign instructors in cooperation with the Humanities Department Head

  • Conduct classroom observations of adjuncts in areas of responsibility

  1. Employ innovative instructional methods, which include the use of a variety of audio/visual technology into appropriate classes
  2. Maintain student and course records in accordance with standards set by the department head, the division head, and the institution
  3. Promote the objectives of the department, division, and institution through service on committees and participation in special projects as assigned.
  4. Post and keep office hours in accordance with the institutional, divisional, and departmental policies
  5. Participate in special projects and serve on institutional committees
  6. Participate in staff development through format course work, seminars, workshops, professional organizations, or professional literary material.
  7. Provide continuing education experiences for the community.
  8. Actively participate in retention activities at the department and division levels
  9. Actively participate in assessment activities at the department and division levels
  10. Complete all mandatory training as assigned.
  11. Effectively perform other assigned duties, as needed

Working Conditions:

 

  • Normal office working environment.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours to include some nights and weekends.

Duties require extended periods of sitting, standing, talking, listening and computer usage.

Requirements

Education:

Master’s Degree in History. 

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

 

  • Minimum three (3) years teaching and classroom management experience
  • Experience with various instructional technologies.
  • Online instruction and developing curriculum including technology desirable.
  • Excellent organizational skills

 

Communication skills – Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing with clear, grammatically correct English and prepare complex reports on deadline;

Requires interaction with supervisors, colleagues, students, alumni, advisory committee members, and the public, using tact, discretion, and independent judgment.

 

Computer skills – Must be demonstrably proficient in Microsoft Office (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel), as well as e-mail and Internet.

 

Evidences a history of demonstrating ethical and professional behavior.
