Job Description: 

The Interpreter/Disability Services Advisor position is designed with a high degree of versatility and requires application of technical knowledge and skills specific to several distinct departments such as Disability Services and Enrollment Management. This position supports the day-to-day operations of the Disability Services Office by providing interpreting services (primarily in a classroom setting), assisting the Interpreter Coordinator, and providing student disability support services and other personalized assistance to students when not scheduled to interpret. Daily duties may vary based on individual student needs and peak enrollment periods. The Interpreter/Disability Services Advisor serves a key role in promoting accessibility by facilitating communication between students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and campus academic/student support services and various campus-related student events.


 Pay Rate:

$34,102 Salary


Essential Job Functions:

  1. Complete a moderate amount of classroom interpreting assignments for students who are deaf or hard-of–hearing, primarily in classes that require a beginner-to-intermediate level of signing skill.
  2. Interpret for any student extracurricular activities (i.e. tutoring sessions, student organization meetings) and other on-campus student services (i.e. Academic Advisement, Financial Aid, meetings with instructors).
  3. Ensure media captioning compliance and accessibility for campus students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing by coordinating student captioning requests and working with other relevant campus or external offices.
  4. Support the existing schedule of full-time and/or part-time/temporary interpreters as already developed by the Interpreter Coordinator through assisting Interpreter Coordinator with any schedule changes as needed.
  5. Serve as primary provider of student disability accommodations (i.e. reading/scribing), as assigned by Director of Disability Services.
  6. Assist Director of Disability Services with preparation and sending of disability accommodation notification letters to faculty/staff.
  7. Assist Director of Disability Services with maintaining Disability Services website and associated materials as needed.
  8. Assist Director of Disability Services with campus training and outreach.
  9. Assist Director of Disability Services with updating and maintaining documentation of disability accommodations.
  10. Assist Director with assistive technology equipment checkout and inventory.
  11. Provide coaching and support to students with disabilities to promote persistence and completion of academic goals.
  12. Provide academic advisement and enrollment assistance to students as needed during peak enrollment periods.
  13. Completes all mandatory training and participates in a minimum of two professional development each year.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combined education and experience.




  • Working knowledge of American Sign Language including but not limited to technical and academic signs appropriate to an educational setting.
  • Ability to interpret and transliterate proficiently in American Sign Language and Signed English.
  • Ability to communicate diplomatically, clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing to exchange information, give/receive instructions and respond to inquiries appropriately.
  • Exceptional problem solving and critical thinking skills required.
  • Accurate typing/data entry skills and demonstrated ability to work with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated coordination, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Must be adaptable to performing under moderate levels of stress, imposed by frequent deadlines, peak workloads and public/student contact.
  • Ability to work independently and also collaborate within a team environment while effectively managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to thrive in a high-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Very strong experience working with office technologies including but not limited to: office computers, scanners, internet, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Strong interpersonal skills and sensitivity to a diverse environment in an effort to work and communicate effectively with all students, faculty, staff and community partners.
  • Passion for assisting students with educational endeavors and representing the OSU brand with positivity and professionalism.
  • Evidences a history of demonstrating ethical and professional behavior

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Minimum level QAST IV or RID Certification
  2. Prior experience providing sign language interpreting for deaf and/or hard-of-hearing students in an educational setting.
  3. Superior written and verbal communication skills.



  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combined education and experience.

Working Conditions:

    • Must be able to work flexible hours to include some nights and weekends.
    • Must be able to work in an often busy and noisy environment.
