Job Description: Project SOAR Peer Mentors will assist in planning and delivering programming, and providing outreach within SOAR. The mentors must be continuing SSS-Project SOAR participants that are in good standing. The mentors will serve as role models, campus resource experts, and trusted points of contact for TRIO students and staff. These individuals will possess the skills and knowledge to provide support in academic, social, and personal areas as needed. In addition, these individuals will need to be able to work with a diverse group of students and be willing to participate in campus activities to help build relationships among departments and to be able to encourage mentees to participate in campus wide events. Must commit to this role for one semester.

 

Salary:

$8.00 per hour

 

Essential Job Functions:


  1. Maintain office hours (5-7 hours per week)

  2. Bi-weekly contact logs will be turned into supervisor to show progress with students

  3. Meet face-to-face with assigned peer mentees at least once a month

  4. Attend all SOAR main sponsored events (back to school kick off, orientation, holiday festival, awards banquet)

  5. Attend at least 2 transfer, cultural, or campus events a semester with mentee(s)

  6. Initiate and maintain contact weekly with mentees/students

  7. Notify mentees/students about all SOAR and campus events

  8. Attend events with mentees/students

  9. Maintain accurate paperwork for contact with mentees/students in SSS program

  10. Attend Peer Mentor meetings

  11. Notify supervisors about mentee progress and concerns

  12. Participate in all trainings

  13. Coordinate Study Sessions for students

  14. Other responsibilities assigned by the SOAR staff

Working Conditions:

  • Works in an office environment.

  • Requires extensive interaction with others and use of computer.

  • Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required. Frequent local travel may be required.

  

Physical Requirements:

 

  • Must be able to lift/carry up to twenty pounds.

  • Duties require extended periods of sitting, standing, talking, listening and computer usage.

    Requirements

    Education:

    • Must have a 2.75 GPA or higher

    • Must be enrolled at least part-time

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Experience:

    Continuing and active SSS-Project SOAR student

    Knowledge, Skill, Abilities:

    • Responsible, independent and mature and has ability to motivate others

    • Must be an individual who is honest, respectful, and has integrity

    • Clear understanding of what it takes to be a successful college student

    • Have a sincere desire to guide and support peers academically, professionally, and personally

    • Proficient use of technology, including office equipment, Microsoft Office software, Outlook, (social media)

    • Ability to handle confidentiality agreements

    • Strong problem solving skills

    • Self-starter

    • Understanding of OSU-OKC campus resources

    • Understanding of cultural diversity

    • Passion for assisting students with educational endeavors and representing the OSU brand with positivity

    • Evidences a history of demonstrating ethical and professional behavior
