Job Function:

Provides technical support for the delivery and maintenance of science lab classes, especially cadaver anatomy labs. Coordinates the activities and materials of all science labs in collaboration with lead instructor faculty and other lab technicians. Management of temporary student lab technicians for the dissection of cadaver specimens for the delivery of instructional content in anatomy classes under the direction of the department head and lead instructor faculty. Additional duties include support of other science activities and day-to-day functions.


Pay Rate: $13.12/ hr.


Essential Job Functions:


  1. Responsible for oversight of all science lab maintenance of activities and materials inventories.
  2. Purchasing and maintaining order records for science department supplies. Will include p-card statement preparation and other responsibilities.
  3. Coordination of routine lab safety monitoring and review of practices.
  4. Coordinates cadaver transfers with OSU-CHS Body Donor Program.
  5. Dissection and maintenance of human cadavers and the lab environment.
  6. Maintain a safe working environment in cadaver labs by monitoring formalin levels and appropriate collection and disposal of biological specimens. Any hazards are to be reported to the lead instructor and the department head.
  7. Communicate with the Anatomy Lead Instructor on the timing of lab dissections and pacing of course.
  8. Interview and select student anatomy lab technicians. Coordination and supervision of student anatomy lab technicians for the fulfillment of open lab and dissection schedules. Maintain schedules, timesheets, etc.
  9. Maintains an accurate inventory of anatomy lab models and supplies.
  10. Track budget spending and communicate monthly spending with department head.
  11. Assist science faculty in the preparation of materials for science classes, as needed.
  12. Completes all mandatory training and participated in a minimum of two professional development each year.
  13. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate’s degree in related field or relevant experience.

Work Experience:
Experience with human and/or mammalian dissection.
Experience with general lab safety and best practices.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Dissection of biological specimens.
  • Adapt and apply laboratory methods and procedures.
  • Ability to develop and follow general safety standards for laboratory environments.
  • Ability to maintain budgets, inventory, and purchasing tasks and documentation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of office technologies including but not limited to: office computers, fax machines, scanners, internet, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Must be adaptable to performing under moderate levels of stress, imposed by frequent deadlines, peak workloads and public/student contact.
  • Ability to communicate diplomatically, clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing to exchange information, give/receive instructions and respond to inquiries appropriately.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and sensitivity to a multicultural environment in an effort to work and communicate effectively with all students, faculty, staff and community partners.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervisor and also collaborate within a team environment
  • Passion for assisting customers and representing the OSU brand with positivity and professionalism
  • Evidences a history of demonstrating ethical and professional behavior

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences with 4 credit hours of gross human anatomy class or relevant work experience with dissection of biological specimens.
  • Experience with budgets and ordering.
  • Purchasing and inventory experience.

Working Conditions:

  • Laboratory environment. Exposure to chemicals (specifically, formalin), potential biological hazards, and repetitive activities common to science labs, such as cutting and pipetting.
  • Sharp instruments and power tools are used.
  • Position may require up to 30% of the work week be performed outside of regular working hours.

Physical Requirements:

  • Duties require extended periods of sitting, standing, talking, listening and computer usage.
  • Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting up to 30 lbs. unassisted, bending, standing, repetitive motions, climbing or walking.
  • Must be able to handle and safely dispose of chemicals, solutions, biohazardous material, and any other hazardous materials common to the science lab.
