Job Function:

To provide instructional assistance and support for Veterinary Technology laboratory classes by conferring with the Instructor of Record for assigned labs. 

Pay Rate: 

$12.00 - $17.00

Essential Job Functions: 


1.      To provide instructional assistance and support for Veterinary Technology laboratory classes by conferring with the Instructor of Record (IOR) for assigned labs.

2.      Dismantle labs upon completion, or supervise dismantle or reset, by students. 

3.      Check and routinely inventory lab and clinical supplies, replace these at established stations.

4.      Update supply needs on the central purchase request list

5.      Assist with stock and supply maintenance within the assigned lab and clinical spaces as needed by checking expiration dates and reporting.

6.      Assist with supervising students on field trips.

7.     Completes all mandatory training.

8.     Performs all other duties as assigned.

 Associate in Applied Science in Veterinary Technology

Current Oklahoma registration required as a lawfully credentialed Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)

Must possess a valid Oklahoma driver’s license and be willing and able to drive a university owned vehicle to off-campus locations.

Must be willing to transport students or other university approved passengers.


Work Experience:

A minimum of 3 years’ experience as a veterinary assistant and/or registered veterinary technician in a public or private clinical setting or a Bachelor’s of Science degree.

Experience caring for a variety of animal species.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching technical skills and tasks to others
  • Experience with large anima and/or exotic animal handling and husbandry
  • Flexibility of work schedule



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Highly organized with good communication skills
  • Knowledge of current instrumentation and equipment used in the veterinary field
  • Knowledge of currently acceptable surgical, restraint, and laboratory techniques
  • Knowledge of AVMA accreditation requirements for an accredited veterinary technology program
  • Experience in the handling and restraint of a variety of small and large animal species
  • Must be interested in the success of the Veterinary Technology Program and its students
  • Must adhere to the program standards for teaching tasks and procedures
  • Must exhibit the professional deportment and demeanor befitting a role model



Working Conditions:

  • Must not be adversely affected by (allergic or sensitive to) formaldehyde, any commonly used veterinary formulations, or any commonly encountered domestic species to the extent that such allergy/sensitivity would impair job performance
  • Must be tuberculosis negative and agree to annual tuberculosis testing at own expense
  • Must either be rabies vaccinated (assuming Human Pre-exposure Vaccine is available) and maintain routine titer checks, and obtain booster vaccines as necessary or agree to sign a waiver of liability
  • Must be able to work outdoors in typical environmental conditions (rain, heat, cold, wind) with appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Must be able to work in a noisy environment with appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Must be comfortable working in large groups of people and/or animals
  • Must be flexible to changes in work schedule


Physical Requirements:

  • Position requires some physical ability - may be required to lift/move animals, instructional materials, file boxes, classroom tables, chairs, etc.  Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds unassisted, using proper lifting techniques.
  • Must be able to remain standing for extended periods of time to perform commonly accepted veterinary procedures that pertain to the Veterinary Technology curriculum.
  • Must be able to manipulate and/or lift animals as necessary to perform tasks related to veterinary care with appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Must be able to operate manual cattle and horse enclosure and restraint equipment (corral gates, stocks, chutes, head gates, etc.) with appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Individual must be able to stand/walk approximately 7- 8 hours per day.  Position requires frequent to continuous bending/stooping, squatting/crouching and pushing/pulling.
  • Manual dexterity/visual ability to perform common veterinary medical procedures including but not limited to administering injections, placing IV and urinary catheters, positioning patients for various medical and diagnostic procedures, operating microscopes, refractometers and other diagnostic equipment.
